My Valentine’s Day Conversion

When I was growing up, Valentine’s Day was a big deal. My seven siblings and I would present Valentine cards to each member of the family. Some of them were made in Art Class at school, some bought in bunches at the store. Remember the little heart-shaped suckers we’d thread through the cards?

My Dad would always give his four girls a red carnation and a Whitman’s Sampler. They waited patiently for us, carefully placed at our seats at the dinner table. My Mom was all about the holiday too. We’d all get a box of those molar-cracking Conversation Hearts and candy necklaces. Eight kids with sugar-highs and chalky necks. It was so fun.

When I dated my husband, he was a broke college student on the GI bill. Valentine’s Day was a simple meal at my apartment, molar-cracking Conversation hearts included. He’d buy me a card and a small bunch of flowers from the grocery store. To me, they were as precious as golden coins.

So imagine my surprise when my dear husband of twenty-five years decided that Valentine’s Day was no more than a ‘Hallmark Holiday’. I would look at him every year and wonder where people have ideas like that. I mean, I get that you didn’t have big celebrations when you were a child. But since meeting me, and celebrating yearly with our two children, your Valentine Days were full of pink cupcakes, cards, homemade placemats, hearts on the front door, laughter and love and sugar-highs. Oh. And molar-cracking Conversation Hearts.

‘Hallmark Holiday’? Really? Thank goodness the kids were grown and gone.

Oh, I’d get flowers and a card. He’d look at the floor when I thanked him. He was doing a really nice thing for me, but it was given as an obligation. The whole ceremony was so backward and awkward.

Why was it so tough to show me a little joy and love on this one special day?

Well, this year, you can call me a Valentine’s Day Convert. You won’t hear a peep out of me. You see, I celebrated New Years Day this year by falling down some stairs and breaking my right leg. I had surgery on January 7th to stabilize the fracture with a plate and eleven screws. I haven’t been able to bear weight on that leg this year. I am a one-legged, hopping, unbalanced, cast-and-then-boot laden lady. Talk about backward and awkward.

Ever since January first, my husband has:

  • Made every meal (except for maybe five donated dinners).
  • Made a Starbucks run at least once a week for me, even though he doesn’t drink coffee, and thinks the prices are a “gigantic rip-off”.
  • Done all the grocery shopping and the laundry.
  • Helped me get dressed for the day, and for sleep.
  • Got me off the floor where I fell at 4 a.m., coming out of the bathroom. I hopped over to my scooter and somehow missed it, falling flat on my back like a marooned turtle.
  • Slept next to me on a blowup mattress, me on the recliner after I almost passed out.
  • Hauled me up the last stair to the second floor, as I jump to my walker, so I can take a shower.
  • Served tea for me and my friend so we could have a ‘tea party’.
  • Asked me what he can do for me “to make it easier” every day. Every. Day.

I wonder, does a broken leg fix eyes too?

You know what honey? You can skip the flowers and card this weekend. I realize now that I have been getting a love gift from you every single day of this year. Each day is a doggone Hallmark Holiday around here, and I’m just sorry I never saw it before now.

Thank you for loving me so much and so well all these years. This weekend, how about we celebrate with a Starbucks. Or not. It won’t matter, because you celebrate me every day. I only hope I do the same for you.

    • Hi Freda! Thank you for your good wishes! You are so right, it’s not fun being restricted for so long. I’m looking forward to the next step, which is PT. I have my next xray on 2/18. I appreciate your prayers for enough healing to start right away!

He is a good nurse, very patient! (No pun intended!)
      Blessings,
      Ceil

    • Hi Anna! Thank you for your kind words about my husband. He really has shown me what love is, minus flowers and candy. It’s boots on the ground every day.

I do thank God for him!
Thank you for visiting today 🙂 Happy Valentine’s Day!

  1. Well, they can all have their molar-busting sweets and ready-to-wilt flowers. I’ll take a man with a servant’s heart any day of the week.

I can’t help but think that our men would get along quite well, Ceil …

And I pray for no more falls for you, friend. Unless it’s falling in love with that guy yet once again.

    ;-}

You’re blessed! But you already knew that …

    • Hi Linda! I love the way you write ‘ready-to-wilt’ flowers! I think I saw that phrase on your blog too. I’ll have to remember that one.

Wouldn’t it be fun to live close-by? Well, I am very happy to know you through our blogs too. And yes, my husband does have a servant heart. I’m the slow one, not noticing it until a HUGE event changed so much for me.

Yes, no more falls! I’ve come close, but my angels are with me. I just have to slow down and watch what I do.
      Happy Valentine’s Day!

    • Hi Pam! Thanks for visiting! Yep, I sure do have a keeper (in more ways than one, I need a keeper these days!). Aren’t we blessed to have married such wonderful guys??

Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours 🙂

  2. Ceil what a great eye opener and truly an inspiration of what true love is. Carl has really showed you what sacrifice and for better or worst really means. God really blessed you and I know that you would do the same for him. God Bless and thanks for sharing.

    P.S. Way to go Carl.

Happy Valentines day to both of you. Enjoy the granddaughters this weekend.

    • Hi Leslie! How nice of you to comment, thank you for coming!

I really have a great husband, it sometimes takes a big event to realize it. (Red face) He’s been great, and I don’t know what I’d have done without him. I know I’d do the same for him, I just hope I’d do it with the same light heart.

We are looking forward to the Seibert invasion 🙂
      Happy Valentines Day!

  3. “molar-cracking Conversation hearts”….that made me LOL! I loved….and still do….the orange ones!!! What a “sweetheart” you have, and he’s proved himself the last 6 weeks. A true Valentine! HOPE you have a special Valentine’s Day weekend….and smile and tell your honey he loves you when he hands you the flowers and Hallmark card! 😉

    • Hi Mari! Awww, thanks! Too bad it took a broken leg to open my eyes, but I really do appreciate my husband so much.

Hope you don’t have to work, but even if you do, have a wonderful Valentines Day with your husband and family 🙂
      Ceil

  4. Oh Ceil!!!! You KNOW how much I can appreciate this!! I love that your hubs and my hubs are such SERVING men of LOVE!!! *THIS* is where love is found… in the hard parts… when they step up… every single DAY. And ask us how they can help us… and they do and do and do and do and never relent or get weary… or at least show it.

I love this post so much. Forget Valentine’s day- we get it every day.

    • Hi Chris! You know exactly what I’m talking about, I know that. Our husbands do so much for us while we are so unable to help ourselves. And you have children to care for too! Your husband wins the ‘Best Valentine Ever’. Lucky us, and you said before 🙂

We do get it every day, and I am so grateful.
Happy Valentines Day to you and your family,
      Ceil

    • Hi Kathleen! Thank you for your kind words about the post. I agree! My husband is a living, breathing example of St. Paul’s discourse on love in Corinthians. I am one blessed woman.

Happy Valentines Day to you and yours too 🙂

  5. What a sweet, precious post! Your lifetime Valentine showing you his love and devotion in so many countless ways is a dear blessing to read about. I am SO sorry you fell and broke your leg and are having to endure such a difficult season of life. I trust the Lord that you will heal quickly and will soon be back to normal. In the meantime, enjoy the love of Jesus flowing through your dear husband…how very blessed we are to have men like these in our lives. 🙂

    • Hi Cheryl! Thank you for visiting today! I like that name: “lifetime Valentine”. Thanks for that, and you are absolutely right.

Yeah, I’m not a big fan of breaking my leg either. It’s been a real lesson in slowing down. In patience. In listening instead of talking. Seeing my husband for the great guy he really is. It’s not wasted time, believe me!

I’m so glad that you are blessed in this way too. God has been so good to us 🙂
      Happy Valentine’s Day!

  6. What a wonderful story. Reminds me of my husband. He don’t care about Valentines day either, but he always said that for Him it is Valentines day every day with me. He is the most loving and caring man for me too.
Praying you get well soon Ceil.

    • Hi Joy! Our husbands could be twins! I really do appreciate his loving care of me, and it’s endless. It’s already been six weeks, and I’m not even walking yet. God bless his patience! I wonder if I could be that calm day after day…

Thank you for your powerful prayers. I know they are helping 🙂
      Blessings,
      Ceil

  7. LOVE this, my friend! Isn’t it something the length we have to go to in order to realize these precious truths. Reading over your list of all that your husband has done for you since the first of the year brought back memories of all my husband did for me in 2011 when I broke my left femur and right wrist. Our husbands love us and show it in ways that maybe aren’t so romantic at times, but when we examine the things they do for us we come to understand what love really is all about …and how to express it.

    • Hi Dianna! Boy are you right. Nothing romantic about helping me get dressed, or to the shower, but it means everything. I was ‘okayed’ for an LPN to come in from our insurance carrier, but I don’t need it. My husband is my nurse 🙂

I can’t imagine breaking your femur and your wrist. Oh Lord, that would be terrible. you can’t walk, and you don’t have two arms for balance either. Phew. You really went through it. Bless you and your husband. You are a wonderful couple! What an example of love that gives in good times and bad.

      Happy Valentine’s Day!

  8. I love this post and totally agree. You know, when we were younger, Valentines Day meant a little more to me than it does now. My husband makes everyday about love so to have a day about love seems useless. I think Valentines day is for men are still learning. Maybe they’re novices at the whole marriage or love thing and sometimes they need a booster to keep their love lives healthy. But, if you have a healthy love life then what’s the point? Great post!!

    • Hi Tori! How nice of you to visit today!

Thank you for your kind words about the post. And it’s great that you and your husband agree on making Valentines Day every day! I still like the idea of a day dedicated to love. (Kind of like Mother’s Day.) But I totally agree with your thoughts, because my husband has shown me what everyday love really is.

Blessings to you and your husband,
      Ceil

  9. Love this Ceil! When my wife was working full-time I did my “pastor job” but then came home and did about 90% of the housework (except cooking). Cooking and Bill don’t mix. Sometimes without a peep of thanks. Now that scenario is over with my wife’s retirement. So I try to make sure I say thanks for the slack she has picked up now that she is home most of the time. The little things are often forgotten.

    • Hi Bill! You learned a lot from being “Cooking Bill”! I think it is so easy to forget how much we and others put into the simple things in life. And it gets overlooked. Like you said, the little things get glossed over.

I hope you two have a wonderful Valentine’s Day celebration 🙂
      Ceil

  10. Awww. You are so blessed with such a loving hubby! Him making things easier and better for you can never be outweighed by any gifts. I hope one day I’ll find someone like that. Your story is an inspiration.

    • Hi Lux! I am blessed. Sometimes it takes a ‘big thing’ to realize it. He’s really been there the whole time. Which is good, because I’m not sure what I would have done without him.

I’m so happy you were inspired! I know you will find someone just as supportive someday 🙂
      Ceil

  11. It’s amazing what some clean spectacles can do for us, isn’t it? My husband calls it the same thing. Sometimes I am so embarrassed (if he says it in front of the kids) or just plain frustrated. I always try to remember how much he shows me “love” throughout the year even though that can be difficult to do unless something “big” happens. (Not a broken leg, thank goodness.) Wishing you a very happy St. Valentine’s day!

    • Hi Patty! No kidding. Sometimes it just takes that ‘big thing’ to recognize what I have. I’m so grateful for my husband’s loving care.

Your husband too huh? It just mystifies me. But I’ll be looking at it all a bit differently now. Like you, I’ll remember all the good he does through the year.

Happy Valentine’s Day to you too 🙂
      Ceil

    • Hi Stephanie! Aww, thank you Stephanie! You have such a tender heart. I really am a blessed woman to have such a wonderful husband to help me when I really need it.

Love and hugs right back at you! Happy Valentines Day to you and your guys 🙂
      Ceil

    • Hi Linda! How fun to see you commenting here! Thanks for doing that.

He deserves every kudo. You know I’m not easy to live with (Lol!), and he has done so much for me. And it’s not over yet either. God bless his patience. I am so fortunate to have him in my life.
Happy Valentines Day to you and the family 🙂
      Ceil

  12. Awe… this is so so true, Ceil! And what a tribute to your hubby! I was just telling my hubby the same thing (well minus the breaking of the leg part) I do love Valentine’s Day, because it is my Birthday and all, but I love that he shows me each and every day that he loves me… I mean after all he married me, didn’t he? I just don’t understand why everyone goes “all out” and breaks the bank to celebrate this one day. I like the more simple things… a walk in the park, making dinner, a little sticky note love note attached to the mirror…. nothing fancy, nothing “all out” just simple everyday things he does for me.

I hope you have a wonderful day and I am still praying for you and your leg!!

    Hugs to you my friend!
    Amy

    • Hi Amy! I think a walk in the park on Valentines Day is a perfect plan! We’ve never ‘broke the bank’ either, just had a fun day celebrating family.

But I am coming to see, like you, that Valentines Day can be a daily thing. My husband has really been an invaluable help to me, and it’s all from love. I am so blessed! Would I like flowers? Sure! But you know, having a partner who will help me, happily, and get me coffee? Priceless.
Thank you for your continued prayers, I am so grateful.
Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day with your boys 🙂
      Ceil

      • I meant to wish you a happy Valentines day dear Ceil.
Yes, I do think we are both blessed.
My husband has not been feeling well since we came back from Cancun and I am a little worried about him.
Could I ask you to keep him in your prayers , his name is Jeff.
        Thank you.
And I shall continue to keep you in my prayers .

        • Of course I will pray for your husband Jeff. I’m so sorry he isn’t feeling well. May God send him his healing, peaceful spirit to heal and protect him.
He will be in my daily prayers.
Thank you for asking my friend,
          Ceil

  13. What a loving husband you have, Ceil! It’s those little everyday things that mean so much, but sometimes we need a wake-up call to see them again. I, too, am blessed with a husband who is so thoughtful and filled with TLC.

So it sounds like you may have graduated to a boot? I hope your leg keeps improving!

    • Hi Trudy! We are very lucky ladies aren’t we? I’m so glad that your husband is a ‘TLC’ man too. I guess I just never really saw it. It’s too bad it takes such a big event for me to recognize it, but maybe it’s blessing in disguise.

Yes, I’m in a boot now. Still not weight bearing, but I get another xray next week. Hopefully I’ll be healed enough to start PT. I’d love that!
      Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day 🙂

  14. When I was growing up, my mom always tried to make Valentine’s day special for us kids by putting up a few decorations, making special treats, and giving us each a card. It was great! I’d do the same for my kids. 🙂 Now, though, I don’t really get into the hype.

    • Hi Chrys! Your mom and my mom were kindred spirits! My mom loved all the holidays. My Dad called her “Mrs. Christmas”. We all enjoyed celebrating with her.

I passed down the rituals to my kids too. It’s a great legacy!
Happy Valentines Day to you, however you celebrate it!
      Ceil

  15. Okay, you’re making me cry. This was Simply. Beautiful. God bless your man. So glad to read of all the ways he’s taking care of you during this time of recovery.
Hubs and I have never really celebrated Valentine’s Day. Today is actually his birthday and what does he do??? He takes my car to work so he can give it a much needed bath. Thank you, God, for the husbands you have blessed us with.
Looking forward to our Skype date!! xoxo

    • Hi Beth! No question, my husband gets a gold star. He’s been so patient with me, and just wants me to do well. What a declaration of love…

Just like your husband and your car. What a great guy you’ve got 🙂 And Happy Birthday to him!
We’ll talk soon. Thank you for your lovely comment my friend.
      Blessings to you always,
      Ceil

    • Hi Ellen! What a great thought! I love that…I hope the Conversation Hearts company will make one like that. He really is a ‘keeper’!

He was so embarrassed to pour tea, but he did it, and I just loved him for it. He has made every day a Valentine’s Day.
Have a great one yourself 🙂
      Ceil

  16. Love this and I’m glad your honey is taking good care of you. I’m sure it’s blessing him too. One of those things that make a really great team . . . the nature of nurture. I’m sure you’re going to be more than ready for Spring for soooo many reasons. Praying that healing continues quickly! Hugs!

    • Hi Deb! Thank you for visiting, I know you are not feeling very well. Take care of yourself!

Thank you too for your lovely comment. I know we both have wonderful husbands. I guess I just didn’t know how much on my end. I will be giving him an extra hug on Saturday.

And yes, I can’t wait to walk again! I hope the xray works out well next week. I’m ready to work hard.
      Blessings!
      Ceil

  17. Ceil, I popped over to your blog after reading your comment on mine, and I’m so glad I did! What a great record of your husband’s kindness! It sounds like you’ve had a painful go of it lately, but I’m guessing that, when you think back to this season of your life, your husband’s loving acts of service will stand out more than all the awkward hobbling!

    • Hi Lois! I’m sure you’re right. I need to remember this time a proof of how much God wants to take care of me. And he is using my husband for sure. I am very blessed.

Thank you for visiting today! It was great to meet you, and I look forward to getting to know you better. I know I’m hobbling now, but I hope to be walking in a month or so.
Blessings to you, and Happy Valentines Day!
      Ceil

    • Hi Deb! You’re right, my parents really celebrated holidays. We had so much fun. I was honored to pass down the traditions too.

I hope you and your hubs have a wonderful Valentine’s holiday! Maybe a movie? I know how much you love those 🙂
      Blessings,
      Ceil

  18. Ceil…what a beautiful post, straight from the heart. My husband would do the same for me if I was ever in your situation….IF I would let him. Hmmm…something for me to consider. Maybe I need a Valentine conversion too. Thank you. sweet friend…and have a WONDERFUL Valentine’s Day, crunching those molar cracking conversation hearts and all 🙂

    • Hi Debby! You know, I tend to very independent myself. I like to do things for myself. If you were in my shoes, you just wouldn’t be able to, even if you wanted to. It’s very humbling.

I know your husband would help you, you two are so close. Both of our mates deserve a special squeeze tomorrow 🙂
      Always great to see you!
      Ceil

  19. Ah, that’s cute. I’ve never really been big on the Valentine’s thing either, but fortunately neither is my wife, haha. I’m sorry that you broke your leg, but this experience has shown you a lot – like in this example about your husband’s love for you.

    • Hi Loren! It sounds like you are not the only one who doesn’t really celebrate Valentines Day. I guess it’s a big deal to me because of my upbringing.

I really do appreciate my husband so much. He has been so patient and helpful. If I were him, I’d get tired of it all. He must have a lot of the Spirit in him. We are both blessed with each other.
      Have a great weekend,
      Ceil

  20. AMEN, CEIL!! Sounds like that’s more love than a candy necklace.
But may the Lord bless you and heal your leg on schedule.
    HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY, anyway

    • Hi Jean! It’s always a treat to see you here 🙂

Thank you for your prayers, I really cherish them. And I pray for the same thing, believe me.
Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours! Maybe I’ll see you this weekend at church.

      Blessings,
      Ceil

  21. Although flowers etc are very nice to receive, it is the constant giving of love in little ways that is so important.
So sorry that you have had such a bad time lately. Take plenty of rest (you probably can’t do much else), and allow yourself to be cared for.

    • Hi Elizabeth! I think your first sentence says it all.

I’m sure my story reminds you of all the time you helped your husband with his health issues. God bless the caregivers, they are the reflection of Christ in his mercy.

It’s good that I’m getting stronger, and I hope to start PT after next week. Until then, I’ll gratefully accept the care. I don’t want to fall again!
      Have a great weekend,
      Ceil

  22. Wow! You really are having a never ending Hallmark holiday, Ceil. How sweet your hubby is taking such good care of you. I love how your family celebrated when you were a child. That is so endearing. And yes those conversation hearts are absolutely “molar-cracking!” That made me laugh every time I read it :).

    • Hi Candace! (I really like the photo of you with some tea/coffee. So homey!)

And yet we would eat those Conversation Hearts all the time. We’d even try to make sentences out of them. Such a fun time in my life 🙂 I’m glad the memory made you laugh.
Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day, and a great weekend too,
      Ceil

  23. Dear Ceil,
I want to thank you for writing this post. My husband and I have been married for 34 years. We have never been too sentimental about Valentines Day….often saying to each other, ” we’re not doing anything too special are we?” I have hinted that fresh flowers from the grocery would make me happy for years, but IF he buys flowers, they are perennials…nice, but a different than what I might have done. For the last 2 years, I have struggled with the effects of undiagnosed Lyme Disease. It has shaken us to the core. My husband has become not only the breadwinner, but the cook, maid, gardener, and driver for me. It has been very challenging, especially for someone like me that was active and healthy. This post made me realize all that he has done, the expressions of love that I might overlook because I don’t feel well. He has never complained, just cared for me. I’m going to tell him so as I have tried to do all along, but your post here has made me think much more of the gratitude I feel for him. Thank you. I hope you continue to recover and gain strength. You will be in my prayers, Ceil. Thank you again.
PS and I’m smiling about the conversation hearts too.

    • Hi Anita! I hope you get to crunch a few Conversation Hearts today <3 !!

So you know exactly what it's like around here. I give thanks for your husband too, who has never complained, but takes care of the woman he loves in her need. There just isn't any other love like that. What a great guy you have there! It's easy to hang around when everything is perfect. But when it isn't? That's the test of love.

I feel like we have a connection through our disabilities! I do hope that both of us will continue to improve, and I will be praying for you, and your husband. May God grant you his grace in a way you will recognize today!
      Blessings always,
      Ceil

  24. Your grateful words today made me tear up. That hubby of yours is a walking, talking, Valentine! Every day, not just in February. Thank you for sharing so beautifully from your personal love life. You are still on my prayer list and I trust you are healing well. Have a wonderful Valentine’s weekend!
    Hugs,
    Mary

    • Hi One-Minute-Kisser! Happy Valentines Day to you and your lucky hubby 🙂

I appreciate your kind words Mary. I am so blessed to have him in my life. And honestly, sometimes it takes a hard thing to see it more clearly. It amazes me that he just keeps helping, and being concerned for all these weeks.

Thank you for your powerful prayers, I know they are helping me to heal. Thank you for your generosity.
      Valentine Blessings,
      Ceil

    • Hi Dee! I think that’s right. It might not be hearts and flowers, but he takes very good care of me, especially now. It really opened my eyes to what true love is 🙂

Hope you’re having a great weekend!
      Ceil

  25. Oh what an awesome husband you have! There really is too big of a hype made out of one day-when in reality we should be showing love every single day – like your husband is doing!
Have a great day! Lisa :O)

    • Hi Lisa! I’m sure that you experienced the same feelings and gifts of love with your husband. It really is an awesome thing.

It’s not just a day, like you said…it’s a lifetime!
      Happy Weekend 🙂
      Ceil

  26. Love is … having many reasons to say thank you.

This is a wonderful post Ceil. Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your husband.

Thank you for your comment on my blog. I’ve responded there and would be grateful if you would visit again in a few days as I wish to explore that subject a little further and would appreciate your views and input.

    God bless.

    • Hi Victor! Sure, I’ll come back this week. It was a very interesting topic, and one many wrestle with, including me.

I hope you and your wife had a wonderful Valentine’s Celebration too. We have so much to be thankful for in our partners for life…God knew what he was doing when he chose mine for me 🙂

      Sunday blessings,
      Ceil

  27. Ceil, what a beautiful tribute to your husband. I love this story because I am of the other camp…the one your husband belongs to. My husband brought me flowers after a day where I had been having a really rough time. That meant more to me than a dozen roses on a day where it is expected. True love shows itself daily, like your husband. I hope you are healing well and will soon be back on your feet. Sometimes, God allows us to experience these thing to teach us and it sounds like you sure have been learning. Thanks for sharing this with us.

    • Hi Mary! It sure sounds like your husband is a ‘keeper’ too. What a thoughtful gesture, to get flowers ‘just because’. I can understand why that meant so much to you.

I hope you had a great weekend and Valentine’s Day too,
      Ceil

  28. Thanks again for your Valentine wishes on my blog Ceil – meant so much! I just LOVE this post. I think Valentine’s Day puts way too much pressure on people and that they are forced to do things, not so much out of love, out of obligation. And this is coming from one who started dating my now hubby so many years ago during the month of February (I was just a sophomore in high school and he a junior – just babies I tell ya!) and got married ON Valentine’s Day. Over time we have decided to give cards or gifts or not – sometimes we shop together for something we would like. We always celebrate our love and always are thankful for each other.

    • Hi Mindy! You got married on Valentines Day? That is so cool!

So is the fact that you just keep on celebrating in all different ways. I think shopping together is so fun! My husband is a rare breed, he loves to shop. Mostly in resales, but that can be fun too. He rarely passes up a bargain.

I didn’t meet my husband until I was 23 years old, so your story of meeting in high school is amazing to me! Well, I did go to an all-girl high school, but I did my share of dating. I guess God was just waiting for me to find the right guy 🙂
      Hugs and blessings!
