It’s a shiny new year, so it’s time to pick a shiny new word to guide me through 2015.
Introducing: JOY !
The word came to me on a very cold day last month. Outside, the temperature was below freezing with a biting wind. I don’t like to exercise in that kind of weather, but I despise treadmills. They’re so boring, and hard on the knees too.
So I pulled on my wind-resistant jacket, fleece hat, neck warmer, and wool mittens. I stepped on the path, and naturally, the wind was blowing right at me. I pulled my neck warmer up to cover my nose, and pulled my hat down to my eyebrows. As I hunched forward into the wind I thought “I must look like a moving coat rack!” The only time I looked up was to cross streets or greet another crazy person out for a walk.
A half hour later, I turned around to head back to the car. It was like a new day! The wind was at my back so I could release my nose from it’s fleece cover, and pull up my hat. I looked up at the beautiful view of a piercing blue sky. The sun was shining too. It was beautiful.
Isn’t that always the way. When cold winds blow and it’s freezing in my life, I’m hunkered down too. I get so involved in defending myself against the storms, I don’t see what glorious things God has set before me.
But what else could I have done? I had to cover up in the cold weather. As I finished walking to the car, I wondered…what was missing? Then it came to me. Joy.
The first half of my walk was a painful experience. But if God was with me, joy was with me too. I just had to challenge my self to find it. It’s harder to find in icy weather, but it’s not impossible. No, I didn’t see the sky on the first part of my journey, but why beat myself up over it? I needed to ask myself instead ,”What did you see?” Now challenge is ‘on’ to find the good things.
I started thanking God for my warm coat, mittens and hat. I told him how much I enjoyed exercising outdoors, and how happy I was to be able to do something positive for my health. Finally it came. Joy!
So in this new year, I’m going to take another look at the things I see as joyless experiences. I may not see anything positive at first, but if I take the time, I know God will lead me to joy. It might take a while, and that’s ok. My word for last year was “Surrender”. In 2014 I worked on surrendering my timing to his. So I’m well prepared to wait.
I’m ready for a year with more joy in my days. With surrender in one hand, and joy in the other, I can’t wait to start!

What a great story. I have chosen “patience’s” for my word. I have to realize that when I ask God for help I need to be attentive and patient to hear his response. I tend to take back what I ask because I don’t think he is responding fast enough.

It’s a new day. This spoke to me and confirms where I feel that I am at in life. It’s a new day. I’m not sure my back is to the wind yet. There are still some mountains ahead, but I feel there is a light…a calm…something good on the other side. And it is good.

I like the application Ceil. I know how nice it is to be riding against the wind and looking at the computer and it reads 6 or 7 or 8 mph then to change directions and that same computer will read 14 or 15 mph. Makes it all worthwhile. So true with our faith as well. I look forward to walking with you this year (although I prefer to ride). 🙂

Joy is a great word Ceil!
It’s funny because one of my favourite Bible Study authors, Margaret Feinberg, wrote a study called “Fight Back With Joy”. Your post reminded me of her study because she speaks about facing those trials in life and still embracing joy.

I know there’s no ‘trick’ to joy in every circumstance. It comes from grace. So, I pray for the grace to increase my experience of joy in Christ in everything. A tall order! But I know he wants it for me. Can’t wait to feel that ‘joy, joy down in my heart!’

That’s a favorite of mine! While pregnant with Miss C, we did not know the gender. Being over the moon thrilled after so many miscarriages, we immediately referred to baby as Baby Joy!

I knew a girl called Joy once. She was always miserable and melancholy. Face like a melon; body like a collie.
Anyway, I also had a treadmill to help me loose weight. I always walk on it width wise rather than length wise because it’s shorter. I neve switch it on because when it moves I tend to spill my whisky.

Ceil, a wonderful word, and one which will open so many new paths of revelation to you. Last year God gave me the word JOY. And then, two weeks into January, my father passed away. I wondered how God was going to teach me JOY in a year when so much grieving and difficulty was sure to be part of my journey. Well, He did show me JOY – and surprised me with new depths of meaning. May He also reveal to you the great wellspring of JOY that comes when we look to Him in all things.
By the way, I used this acronym – Jesus, Only You!!

I love this post and your word for the year, Ceil. 🙂 “I get so involved in defending myself against the storms, I don’t see what glorious things God has set before me.” That is so me… Due to chronic illness, I pretty much have to hibernate for the cold winter months, and I so miss walking in nature. But I am trying to open my eyes to the joy in things around me. The frost patterns on the windows and outside are so unique and beautiful. And I am so grateful for a warm house in these below zero temps! 🙂
I just posted My Word for 2015. It’s “follow,” because as I woke up facing another year, I asked God to help me to follow Jesus and not try to run ahead of Him. May we together on this journey cling to His hand and follow Him no matter what! Hugs!

It’s been a long while since I have been on. Sheesh…. I am so, so sorry that you broke your arm and I will indeed be praying for you!! I am so glad that your grand daughter wasn’t hurt, but sorry that you did. At least it was just an arm, right?!
We have been sick since Christmas and I just wasn’t getting better, so I wen in today and I have a severe ear infection. I can’t hear out of my left ear at all. Ugh! I am ready to be better! 🙂
I love this post and JOY is always something we all could use. I’ve been praying for a new word this year too and the Lord gave me “to flourish”. Yes and Amen!

Love this Ceil!! We truly can CHOOSE joy in any situation… I love how you said that God was with you so JOY was with you. Oh that is beautiful.
It reminds me SO much of one of my own personal revelations while stuck in pain on the couch this past month… I have been posting “Deep Thoughts: From the couch” on my FB personal page (which btw, why aren’t we friends??? FRIEND ME!!! No pressure… but. 😉 ) that shares my ramblings of thoughts as I am NOT feeling joy at all underneath the chaos and mess of the madness going on around me while I can’t do a damn thing but be still in my suffering…
The point of my ramblings is that one of my ‘thoughts’ came very harshly into my heart and convicted me to change my thinking. Although I was (and pretty much still am) stripped of all the things that fill me, I can CHOOSE to be full. I can SEE what is right in front of me and be satisfied with THAT. A limited life, doesn’t have to be perceived as limited.
I think I need to write more about it. Still ruminating and praying over it!

Ceil, your posts always seem to resonate with a holy joy despite how you may think you come across. I am lifted and encouraged by my visits here and it’s only lack of energy (plus the huge number of responses before me..lol!) that prevent me from commenting very much.
How could I not approve of the word ‘Joy’?! It’s a wonderful way to embrace a new year to deliberately seek joy in everything. Our perspectives can really change our circumstances. Reminds me of Phil 4:8. Sometimes it’s hard to find anything praiseworthy about a situation, but if our eyes are on God it becomes much easier to find and to walk in His abundant joy.
