FIVE MINUTE FRIDAY

So now on Fridays a group of people who love to throw caution to the wind and just write without worrying if it’s just right gather to share what five minutes buys them. While the kids are changing into their swimming suits, while the popcorn is popping, while the dog is outside doing his business, while the show cuts to commercial. Just five minutes.

Today, the prompt is: Truth

It always seems to come down to that one, clarifying moment. The moment of truth. It might not be pretty, but we all need to hear it.

You have toilet paper on your shoe.

There’s a seed in your teeth.

What you just said really hurt me.

I can’t see you anymore.

We’re out of Nutella.

(Believe me, this is a tragedy in some circles.)

But there’s another kind moment of truth. This one is pretty, and we all need to hear it too.

I love your haircut.

When you prayed over me, I was at peace.

You did a great job organizing that project.

I’d love to see you again.

We’ve got plenty of Nutella.

Yes, they are only moments, but they change the way we feel, move and have our being. They can be embarrassing or disappointing, as well as supportive and encouraging. All of it truth, all of it real.

Truth is powerful. Dispense yours wisely.

Oh…and here’s a tip. Stock up on Nutella. You’ll make someone’s day.

And that’s the truth.

  8. Oh, don’t even get me going on Nutella! (wait, maybe I will post that, lol.)-Truth..very painful to hear and to tell the truth. “The truth will set you free”, no matter how painful is what we tell the boy. My husbands family is full of liars..and it drives us nuts..lie, lie, lie..can’t tell the truth for nothing..oh wait, I am rambling..I think my dear friend you have touched a nerve with me, lol.     I believe that truth matters ( a hypocrite won’t come before the Lord ), but there is a way and a time to speak if we have something against a person. There is also a time to speak and a time to refrain from speaking, especially about little things that are not that important and would only hurt or embarrass a person.

    • Hi Brenda! What good things you bring up here in your comment. There definitely is a timing issue. We don’t want to crush anyone. The truth is so powerful, we must use it with care.

      It’s hard to write about such a huge topic in five minutes. I take that limit seriously, so I just wrote about how many truths there are, both light and heavy. Including your ideas would have been a good addition. Thank you for your wisdom.

  14. You got me to thinking that there is a lot of responsibility in truth, the pretty and not so pretty. Those moments, even the ones that seem insignificant. can shape who we are and who we become. I can see too, as I grow older, how those moments can free us. On a funny note- I have actually had toliet paper on my shoe and my family laughs about it to this day! And around here, it has to be peanut butter! The truth is I get a little grumpy if I don’t have it. Have a wonderful week-end!

    • Hi Peggy! As I was writing this, I was really struck by how powerful our words and truth are. It is a real responsibility, I agree completely. We can build up, or correct, but it should all be done with love.

      I love peanut butter too! Especially the chunky stuff. I seem to major in “slip showing” myself. Always humbling, but I need to hear that :)

    • Hi JR! I think we all have those experiences of ‘thank you…that hurt.’ Speaking and hearing the truth is a powerful experience, no matter which way it goes. I think that’s why I said we have to use ours so carefully.

      We can lift or dash the spirit by what we say, even if it is the truth. This definitely was an interesting subject to write about…I learned a lot.

      I think when you speak truth always, people are not afraid to speak theirs to you. And that is a respectful relationship. Great thought, I really like that.

      The topic of truth is SO BIG. It’s hard to cover anything of it in five minutes. Definitely food for more thought.

I’m serious, I don’t think you will ever know how thankful I am for you :) Okay, I was just visiting Linda at Simply Linda and I told her what I’m about to tell you….I don’t eat Nutella. You are probably wondering why and to be honest, I don’t know what I don’t :) I guess I will have to go purchase some. The last time I tried it was when I was in Africa on a mission’s trip and that was almost 10 years ago.

  24. Amen, each thought/action/truth is an opportunity to spread God’s love, beauty, peace, joy and blessings. OR, we can be negative and become stumbling blocks. It’s so much more fun to be a blessing. Plus, I can’t tell you the number of times where I was going through something difficult and someone gave me a smile or prayed over me and it made all the difference. I like to pass that on when I can.

  28. My middle name on facebook is Kelly ‘Mustsharetruth’ Howard, lol! It is the truth of Yah’s Word that I love to share, but His Word does both what is ‘perceived’ as positive and negative. It uplifts and carries and sustains, and the list is endless because it is life giving. But it also judges, which is both painful and beneficial. So, when you are out of Nutella, it hurts to grab those car keys late at night and go stock up, but it feels so much better when you DO!   33. A wonderful post Ceil; so much truth in it (hahaha!)! It isn’t always easy speaking words that confront or possibly hurt, and I continue to learn to pray and seek God’s wisdom before approaching people with truths to help and offer support. On the other hand, we don’t speak truths often enough to encourage and lift others up; this s a wonderful reminder sweet friend!

    Ceil, your words frequently bless me more than you could ever know. I am certain that it is the Lord who has brought us together because you frequently speak to my spirit and I get a echo or a confirmation of God’s will through your posts. This hasn’t happened just once or twice… but MANY times.

  38. As I read your post, I started cracking up in laughter! My son and I love Nutella. One Summer we were leaving to SC, and in the middle of the night I remembered I don’t have nutella. I was disturbed and couldn’t sleep. So, First stop was to the store. I was happy and I had it next to my seat with homemade bread. What a truth you have wrote, the best post of the year!!!
