Seeds for the Soul

There are so many ways God calls a soul into his presence. We are all human, all the same, but all different too. He knows each of us, and uses what we love to call us. The goal is to get our attention, so he can feed us.

I have a bird feeder in my backyard. I’m new to this whole bird-feeding thing.

Wandering through a Kmart that was closing, I found a tube style feeder. Very inexpensive. Hmm…this might be fun. I brought it home, wondering what kind of seed I should use. My neighbor told me that she had two feeders: one with wild birdseed, and one with black sunflower seeds. Each attracts a different type of bird.

Not being able to make up my mind, I went out and bought both. I filled the feeder half way with wild seed, and finished with the sunflower seeds. Everyone’s happy.

What fun it is to sit out on my screened porch and watch! It’s fascinating. Each bird searches for just the right seed. A finch lands on the perch of mixed seed. One peck and it moves to the next perch, hoping for those black sunflower seeds.

It’s the same with the wrens. One nip at the sunflower seeds; up to the next level they go. They know what they want. No second-rate lunch for them.

Different seeds for different birds. But, in the end, all of them are fed just the way they need.

God uses all different kinds of ‘seeds’ to draw his children to him too. Some people just love soft music, or opera. The melodies make their hearts soar to the heavens. Some might experience the presence of the Lord in nature. Rolling waterfalls and wildflowers turn minds to the Creator of these wonders.

For me, it’s nature and candlelight. I live by an Arboretum and I love walking along the nature paths. I never walk fast, just sort of amble about, head tilted up to see the leaves play with the sky. Or I might be looking down for the little flower that waves for attention. It’s so calming for me, and turns me to thanks for all the beauty. And I am fed.

Candlelight, or the white mini-Christmas lights lit up on my porch, fill me with peace. I love to pray and read in that room, surrounded by the soft glow. It reminds me of the light that God is in the darkness. The calm invades my soul. And I am fed.

All of life sings its songs, hoping to attract attention long enough to lure me stop and perch for a while. In the middle of that rest and praise, God feeds for the journey.

There are so many ‘seeds’ that can call a soul into the presence of God. What resonates with you, makes you different and fascinating; and makes me stand in awe of a bountiful God. He shows himself in all things, so we may be sure to see him in whatever wraps us in wonder.

  5. Ceil, love your post…I am new to bird feeding also. We live in southern California and the red birds do not come this far south. I decided to feed finches and hummingbirds. They never fail to intrigue me and speak of God provision over me. It calms my soul to sit outside and watch them feed and fly around enjoying God air, trees, grass and all He provides, they just enjoy and give Him a song. That’s how I want to live, enjoy and give Him a song.

    • Hi Betty! Thank you for coming over today! It is so fun to watch them, isn’t it?
I love how you said you want to live for him, and give him a song. That is so beautiful. You have a way with words!

I find inspiration from nature too or in many other areas of my life where God talk to me. Also reading other inspirational blog like you:)

Isn’t it fun to find the Lord in everything around you? Nature speaks to you, which makes it that much more musical and wondrous. So lovely. I know the Lord is just waiting for you in all of creation!

  7. Candle light and soft music playing in the background as I read and study His Word bring a calm upon me like nothing else can. One other thing that draws me in and feeds me also is certain scents burning in my tart burner. They relax me totally.

I enjoyed being here again, Ceil…as always. I enjoyed your illustration of feeding the birds and how it tied in to the way God draws and feeds us!

    • Hi Dianna! Thank you so much for your kind comment, Dianna. You are such a good blog-buddy, and a great source of encouragement for me. I am so blessed to have met you!

I used to like scented candles, but now I find I am allergic to scents, which is a bummer. But I can totally see you with your tart burner, breathing in the presence of the Lord. You paint such a peaceful picture of yourself. Beautiful.

      Happy Thursday!

  8. Hello sweet Ceil! I never tire of your examples for teaching us new things. This post (like the others) was a blessing to me. What calls me to Him, my Lord and Savior….I would have to say early mornings. My husband leaves quite early for work so after he is gone and my son is still sleeping I grab a cup of coffee and sometimes sit on the porch listening to the precious birds singing. It reminds me that it’s a beautiful new day and I look forward to joining the bird’s singing because I have so much to sing about – God’s grace and mercy, breath, the sunrise, love from family. “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord…”

Thank you, dear friend, for being an unending source of encouragement. Enjoy your day! Hugs to you!

    • Hi Stephanie! You are always so kind to me, my friend. Thank you for your constant encouragement, you know how much all bloggers need that.

I can just see you on your porch with your morning cup. I won’t ask to join you though, it’s your alone-time with the Lord. Enjoy it!

Always happy to see you here!

    • ESPECIALLY NOT IN PIE!!! LOL!

I do not like anyone messing up my pie with fruit. Leave the chocolate or pecans in there. No fruit!

I know that’s unhealthy, but what can I say? Thanks for visiting here dear!

  9. Hi Ceil! It’s been a busy week here, trying to get prepared for school. I think I finally got everything planned out for the first month. Craziness of life! :)

I find that my mornings are the best to really be close to God. It’s when my boys are still asleep and everything is quiet and I can really listen close to what God is saying, no distractions. I also love to watch the little birdies and we have feeders in our great big tree out back. My favorite are the Hummingbirds! It’s amazing that God can create something so small, but yet be so fast and so smart! Love all of it!

I love your words, they hit the spot every time! Thank you for sharing!

    Blessings,
    Amy

    • Hi Amy! Oh, I am so honored that you would take the time to come by and say hi, when you are so busy.

I wish we had those hummingbirds, they are so little and cute! And they are smart too? Enjoy your morning peace, Amy. I know the Lord waits for you, because you love his creation so much.

Thank you for your kind words too. You know how much bloggers need a little boost now and again. Thanks for being that boost today :)

      Happy Thursday!

  10. Music, first and foremost! I love looking at nature as well; it inspires and relaxes me and opens my eyes to the majesty of creation. But He draws me in with words too; most of all His Word, but also the words of others that paint extraordinary pictures that stir the heart and open the mind to so much more than I would normally imagine.

    • Hi Alison! Thank you for coming over today! Music is a wonderful creation, that’s for sure. Love it too! How great that you mention the Bible too, and the words of others who can open the world to you.

      Beautiful!

  11. Definitely the beauty in His creation, but mostly the silence when I am still. Those moments often seem so few and far between with the noise of this world, but it is then that He reveals so much to me. What a love!

    • Hi Peggy! I know what you mean, life gets so hectic! But then you appreciate the silence more, right? Your faith is so inspiring. Thank you for sharing it here :)

      Happy Thursday!

  12. I love watching birds on the feeder. I put mine out every autumn and get immense pleasure watching the birds.
Your analogy of the seeds confirms what the Lord has been teaching me the last few years. He reaches us in different way, different styles. One way is no better than another. He is a God of unique variety.

    • HI Elizabeth! I love that idea of God being of infinite variety. Nice insight! He is limitless, so he can call each of us in so many ways. Love it!

I hope you have a blessed weekend, my friend :)

  13. I would have to say worship music, the soft lullaby type and the lowering sun set that streams in the window in the late afternoon. Just lifts my heart in awe and praise. I always try to be in our big brown rocking chair at that time with my bible, it moves me. Tara.

    • Hi Tara! Someone else also mentioned music. I really love that too. Your sunset sounds so peaceful, how blessed are you that you can see the last rays come into your room. Lovely!

      Peace in Christ,
      Ceil
